Habitat Project Description

During construction and restoration, it takes a bit of imagination to see through the dirt and weeds, and envision the end result of this unique project. But that end result will be quite spectacular.  A neighborhood surrounded by mixed native prairie, splashed with wildflower color, highlighted by the sun's reflection off the water, and the ever-present flight of waterfowl from pond to pond.

As opposed to the somewhat lifeless surroundings in most new neighborhoods, this 32 acre parcel (along with adjacent lands) had already featured abundant wildlife and plenty of mature wooded growth before this project began.  In fact, even during the heavy activity of sewer/water/road construction, we saw resident Great Blue Heron, Wild Turkey, Sandhill Cranes, Pheasant, Great Horned Owls, Red Fox, Ducks, a wide variety of song birds, and Whitetail Deer stay on-site.  By strategically planting trees/grasses/prairie (which provide both food and cover for many species) we will ensure the life-long residency of such wildlife.

At rear of most yards, there will be a contiguous area featuring a mix native prairie grasses, trees, and shrubs.  This area will serve to provide owner privacy, a wide variety of wildlife habitat, and of course natural views out your back window. Shorter native plantings will be installed in front of the pond areas in order to preserve the best possible viewshed from your home.
